About this DNA group

The Langtons of Langton, Leicestershire


Haplogroup R1b is the most common paternal haplogroup in Western Europe. As a result of European emmigration populations including the USA, Canada and Australia are also high in this haplogroup.


The DNA single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) that identifies those belonging to Haplogroup in R1b is R-M343. As you can see from the header picture Haplogroup R1b is one branch of the R group and as more people take tests and more information is analysed, these trees get redrawn in ever more detail. Lower levels of R1b are already known, but not commonly part of standard Y chromosome tests, so you may have been told that you belong to haplogroup R1b, but in reality people with only the R1b mutation (R-M343) and no child SNPs are rare. Most have had subsequent SNP mutations and are a lower branch of group R1b. The latest branches of Y-DNA Paternal haplogroups can be found on the ISOGG website. R1, the parent group, one level older than R1b, is thought to be about 18,500 years old. R1b is thought to have its origin in Eurasia, probably Western Asia. The age of the R1b branch is still hotly debated but seems to have occured aroud the Neolific (or New Stone Era - about 12,000 years ago), but could be before, or after. It does seem to be agreed that people in the R1b group gradual migration West over time.


B. and P. are illegitimate descendants of Bishop Walter Langton, and from these result we are able to reconstruct Bishop Walter's DNA. There is a degree of error, but it's close, and this allows us to display him as a modal for this group. Because he lived 700 year ago he has less mutations than the other people in the group, as the mutations since modal Walter have happened in the last 700 years. We arent divulging the names of Bishop Walters ancestors B. and P. yet as we hope to have an exclussive article published about them in the national press.


Bishop Walter Langton was from one of the cluster of Langton villages in Leicestershire (East, West, Church, Thorpe). It was probably West Langton, as Walter held the estate here. He wasnt one of the original Langton family here, there is another original one from West Langton, who we have been able to show have different DNA to Walters descendendants. This actually makes sense as Walter Langton is recorded as saying that his father was Peverell, not Langton. Langton was probably his mothers name, and his adoption of the name was probably tactical. One reason to adopt the name was that there had been famous Langtons holding office in the church - i.e. Stephen, the archbishop, his brother Simon, the Archbishop of York (elect) and their descendant, a contempory of Walter, John Langton the Bishop of Chichester. None of these Langtons were related to Walter, or even came from Leicestershire, but that doesn't mean Walter couldn't still suggest a connection.


Now let's take a look at the Langton sequences in this group. You can see that all these sequences match the overall profile and match closely. There are some other Langton sequences in Haplogroup R1b, but they dont match closely with this group. This means that they share a group R1b common ancestor about 12,000 years ago, but the fact they are also called Langton is a coincidence; they are not related to this profile group and have a different Langton village origin.
