Northumberland Coat of Arms

November 2010

Northumberland Branch

Very little research has been conducted on the Langtons of Northumberland. There are however three villages on the border with scotland which have the name, or had the name, Langton. At least one of these gave rise to a surname.

These coat of arms were recorded in a roll of arms for Northumberland and Newcastle. The arms are noted as being ancient. They are described as: Or, a chevron between three eagles displayed sable. It is hard to accertain from this description what the colour of the chevron is supposed to be. For now we have assumed Argent.

David Langton - 5 Nov 1318

We dont know for sure which Langton village in Northumberland David Langton came from originally but this shield is mentioned in a book on Scottish armorial seals. It does not state which colours it should be, only a description of a squirrel erect on a shield. I have chosen red eyes as i think a demonic sqirrel is a bit more scary on the battle field.

DNA and Shield Linking

We hope to be able to link the various Y chromosome DNA results to coats of arms, so that you can use your DNA test results to identify which coat of arms are yours! We do need your help with this though, we need your DNA results, check out the DNA articles here.
