ST. GEORGE, UT--Gerald Penrose Langton, 81, died Wednesday, February 24, 1999 after a long illness. He was born June 23, 1917 in Salt Lake City to Harold W. and Luella Penrose Langton. He married Karma Preece in the Salt Lake Temple, November 26, 1947; later divorced. He married Carma Hatch Hogan June 8, 1992.Jerry served a mission for the LDS Church in the great land of New Zealand from 1938 to 1940. Apostle Matthew Cowley presided as his Mission President. He cherished New Zealand's wonderful Maori people. He returned several times afterward to renew old friendships. Jerry attended West High School and later the University of Utah, majoring in Business Administration. He enrolled in the R.O.T.C. program and following his mission served in World War II as an officer, retiring with the rank of Captain. He spent 28 years in management with the J.C. Penney Company. He was an extremely successful store manager overseeing some of the companys larger properties. Jerry was called on special assignment from 1959-1961 as a District Manager supervising the Eastern States stores. Jerry loved the outdoors spending many weekends with his family at their mountain cabin he helped build. He was happiest when building room additions, decks and fences to the several homes they owned throughout the years. Jerry was an active member of the LDS Church having served as 1st counselor in a Branch Presidency in Des Moines, IA, 1st counselor in the Stake Presidency also Stake President of the Wichita, KS Stake. He was president of the Bountiful, Utah Chamber of Commerce, president of the Greater Montana Area Boy Scout Council for several terms in the early 1960's. Upon retiring from JC Penneys, Jerry began a profitable and very satisfying 13-year career in Real Estate. He had an infectious sense of humor. He was loved for his devotion to and love for his family; he loved people. He was greatly admired for his strong leadership skills, keen intellect and many accomplishments. His passing is a loss, and he will be sorely missed. Jerry is survived by his wife: Carma Hatch Hogan Langton; one brother, H. Paul (Frances) Langton; one sister, Bonnie (Harold) Hume; six sons: Corydon Hammond, Kim (Irene) Langton, Roger Langton, Brad (Marilyn) Langton, Gary (Ligia) Langton, Todd (Bronwynn) Langton; three daughters: Penny (Dan) Dunford, Barbara (Marty) Cooper, Pam (Steve) Wright; 29 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, (three on the way), many loving nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Luella Langton and sister Laverne Hansen. Funeral Services will be Saturday, February 27, at 11 a.m. at the Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main, Bountiful, Utah. Friends and family may attend a viewing immediately preceding the funeral service at the same location from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Interment in Bountiful City Cemetery, 220 S. 200 W., Bountiful, Utah, under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary, 673-4221.
