  • Irish Coat of Arms

    By Joel Langton

    Irish Branches

The Langton of Kilkenny have long been linked with Lancashire, though they were also linked with Lincolnshire and the waters were somewhat muddied by a family tree (believed to have been created in Ireland) showing a different early origin, linked in with Stephen Langton Archbihop of Canterbury. I have yet to see any real evidence that anyone is related to Stephen Langton, accept that he was of Lincolnshire, and therefore the Lincolnshire Langtons may have some relation.

We have uncovered plenty of evidence to prove the Kilkenny Langtons were of Lancashire and to prove some of their marriages. The first, is that shown on the documented tree from the Irish Langtons, and is shown below:

Note: We do not know whose arms are on the right side of the shield. If you know, then please get in contact.

The second is of the de Clonard family, who married Seraphina Langton of Spain, daughter of Nicolas Langton, originally from Kilkenny Langtons, as a result of this marriage the Langton arms were incorperated into that of the Clonard arms.

Another family who married with the Langtons were the Comerfords, and these the arms which show the marriage.

Quarters 1 and 4: Langton. Quarter 2: Ryan. Quarter 3: Comerford.

Finally, we have the arms of a Nicolas Langton, on a games counter and a cup, both show the same arms and are dated to arround 1720-70. There are not many Langtons with the name Nicolas in any branches of the family, but one which we have does fit exatly with the dates of the artifacts and the shield is what we would expect it to be, based on the first two images above. Therefore we believe this to be the coat of arms of Nicolas Langton who was born in Kilkenny, but married Frances Ccarew of Cadiz, and who died in Spain.

    DNA and Shield Linking

We hope to be able to link the various Y chromosome DNA results to coats of arms, so that you can use your DNA test results to identify which coat of arms are yours! We do need your help with this though, we need your DNA results, check out the DNA articles here.
