About this DNA group

The Langtons of Langton Wold near Malton, Yorkshire, England.

Haplogroup R1b is the most common paternal haplogroup in Western Europe. As a result of European emmigration populations including the USA, Canada and Australia are also high in this haplogroup.

The DNA single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) that identifies those belonging to Haplogroup in R1b is R-M343. As you can see from the header picture Haplogroup R1b is one branch of the R group and as more people take tests and more information is analysed, these trees get redrawn in ever more detail. Lower levels of R1b are already known, but not commonly part of standard Y chromosome tests, so you may have been told that you belong to haplogroup R1b, but in reality people with only the R1b mutation (R-M343) and no child SNPs are rare. Most have had subsequent SNP mutations and are a lower branch of group R1b. The latest branches of Y-DNA Paternal haplogroups can be found on the ISOGG website. If you want to find out more detail on your haplogroup then there are tests that can tell you more about that. Contact us if you want to know more and we'll try to help you.

R1, the parent group, one level older than R1b, is thought to be about 18,500 years old. R1b is thought to have its origin in Eurasia, probably Western Asia. The age of the R1b branch is still hotly debated but seems to have occured aroud the Neolific (or New Stone Era - about 12,000 years ago), but could be before, or after. It does seem to be agreed that people in the R1b group gradual migration West over time.

There are some other Langtons belonging to the R1b haplogroup, who are not part of this profile group. This is not a surprise as 70% of people with an english origin are members of the group R haplpogroup. The other Langtons do not match this group, you can see by their numbers in the main table on the main Langton DNA project page, that they dont match. These other Langtons belong to this same group R haplogroup by coincidence and share a common ancestor with this group, about 12,000 years ago. The fact that they are called Langton is a coincidence and they're Langton origin is from a different Langton village.

This table shows only those people who are related and come from the same Langton village.

We can see that Anonymous Langdon and Anonymous Lanckton are related, their ancestry back to George Langton the early settler of Massachusetts, USA is confirmed with DNA. The most interesting thing here is that we know George was a Langton - the spelling of the family name has changed as the different branches moved to different areas, becoming the more common Langdon (a completely different surname) and a mispelling of Langton as Lanckton.

In addition, the two Landons of France appear to have closely related ancestries. We suspect that these may also be Langtons of the same family origin, who diverged earlier, before George Langton moved to the USA, and before the Landons moved to France from England.

D. and B. Langton are illegitimate descendants of Sir William Langton of Henlys, Gower, Wales. We arent divulging their surnames yet as we hope to have an article exclusive in a national newspaper first. Sir William Langton's profile is a reconstucted one (we havent actually dug his body up and tested his DNA) and he lived about 700 years ago, so this allows us to see a modal for the group, as the dna would have looked 700 years ago. There is a degree of error involved, but this is pretty accurate. Mutations that have occured over the last 700 years can be seen in rows where markers have mutated away from modal producing a different number. There is no Langton village in Wales, so his Langton origin was outside Wales. But he is recorded as having a Yorkshire Langton shield. So it appears that this entire profile group comes from Langton by Malton, Yorkshire, England. Early members of this family were Mayors of York.

The Gold group and Landon (73834) have similar surnames and similar DNA (see the table below; Landon is in pale blue at the bottom). Landon looks as if he belongs in the gold group. However this is a lesson in the importance of testing sufficient markers, 67 or 111 are good in order to identify the correct haplogroup, and is especially important for members of this gold group as you belong to the common R haplogroup. Because Landon (73834) has had sufficent markers tested we know that he is R-L21, also known as R1b1a2a1a1b4, a haplogroup that occurs most frequently in Ireland and despite it's close relationship to the gold group, it is different and he is unrelated. The surname in this case may be a corruption of Lennon or Lanigan. The very similar sequence of the gold group R-U106 also known as R1b1a2a1a1a occurs most frequently in Flanders suggesting perhaps arrival in the Flemish contingent of William the Conquerors army in 1066.

If you have not tested sufficient markers to know that you belong to the gold group's haplgroup (R1b1a2a1a1a) then you should consider upgrading to more markers to confirm this, or discover if your origin is seperate like Landon (73834) below.
