Bristol, Gloucestershire and Newton Park, Somerset Branch

It was hard work researching this family to find out where they originated from, but we have managed to confirm that comment in Maddisons Lincolnshire Pedigrees which stated the an offshoot of the Lincolnshire Langtons started the Bristol Langtons.

The Bristol Langtons originated from Lincolnshire, taking a variant of the Lincolnshire shield with them, which we have found record of in four places.

The two main branches of these Langtons were of Brislington and Newton Park, in the end two Langton cousins married, merging again the two branches, in the end this branch died out, ending with the female marriage of a Langton into the Gore family who adopted the Langton name, becoming Gore-Langton.

Prior to the line dying out the Bristol Langtons became extremely wealthy and prosperous, with members of the family taking the offices of Mayor, Sheriff and M.P. They held alot of land in Doynton, Dryham, Cold Ashton, Horfield, Bedminster, Bristol, Gloucestershire, amoung other places, and Batheaston, Somerset, Kington st. Michael's, Chippenham, Wiltshire.

The four pieces of evidence we have on their origin are as follows.

    1. Volume 4 of the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society magazine, pub. 1858: "Arms: Quarterly, or and gules, a bend sable."

    2. A sketch of Mayor John Langtons drawing room door, which can now be found in a hotel in Hampshire called the ....

Here is a close up. You can see the quartering, though it seems that the 2nd and 3rd quarters contain another coat of arms, probably from a family or two which married into these Langtons. We believe the second quarter may be a fret, belonging to the Harringtons, who are linked to the Lincolnshire Langtons, and who held residence in Kelston, Near Bath.

    3. William Gore Langton's grave monument, which we found in the church graveyard at Newton St. Lowe. He was the William Gore who married Bridget Langton, last of the Langtons of this branch, adopting the Langton name. His grave monument shows the Gore coat of arms, plus the Langton coat of arms ontop of it.

    4. M.P. Joseph Langton of Newton Park, Somerset, had a daugher Francis who married Robert Fry (his family famous for Fry's chocolate), one source records his arms as below:

The amis of Fry (Robert Fry, ob. 1725) impaled with Langton, sable and or, over all a bend argent, and the date 1723, are on the first bell became in the tower:

It is worth mentioning that there may be other junior branches of these Langtons, and we would love to hear from you if you are from this area. The first John of Bristol had a brother called Anselem, and he had a son John who moved to Kilrogan, Bandon, Cork, Ireland, we dont know if he had descendants, but he may have.

    DNA and Shield Linking

We hope to be able to link the various Y chromosome DNA results to coats of arms, so that you can use your DNA test results to identify which coat of arms are yours! We do need your help with this though, we need your DNA results, check out the DNA articles here.
